À propos de cet outil

Most PDFs carry far more than what you see on the page. The author's name and the software that made the file sit in the metadata. The original text often survives under black redaction boxes, ready to be copied out with a simple select-all. Comments, tracked changes, hidden layers, form data, embedded attachments and even JavaScript can ride along. When you send that file to a landlord, a court, a client or a journalist, all of it goes with it.

This tool fixes the problem the blunt, reliable way: it redraws every page as an image and packs those images into a brand-new PDF with no metadata at all. Whatever was hidden in the original simply does not exist in the copy. There is no text layer to copy from, no layer to switch on and no attachment to extract. It is the same approach professional redaction workflows use when the stakes are high.

Before cleaning, you get a short report of what the file carries right now: metadata fields, how much selectable text it contains, annotations, form fields, attachments and scripts. The whole process runs inside your browser. The PDF is never uploaded, which matters, because uploading a sensitive document to an online cleaner defeats the entire point.

Questions fréquentes

Why not just strip the metadata?

Metadata is only one layer of the problem. Our PDF metadata tool removes the author and software fields, but text under a black box, comments and attachments stay. Flattening removes everything that is not visible on the page.

Will the text still be searchable?

No, and that is the point. The clean copy is images only, so nothing can be selected or copied. Keep the original for your own archive and share the clean version. If the recipient needs searchable text, use real redaction first with our redact tool.

Why is the clean file bigger?

Images take more space than text. 150 DPI keeps files small and readable on screens, 300 DPI is print quality. A typical 10-page letter at 200 DPI lands around 1 to 3 MB.

Is my document uploaded anywhere?

No. Reading, rendering and rebuilding all happen in your browser with pdf.js and pdf-lib. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.

Does this make my redactions safe?

Yes, if the black boxes are drawn on the visible page. Flattening burns them into the image, so the text underneath is gone for good. Read why plain black rectangles fail in our redaction guide.
